All Ages, All Skill Levels

The long and short of it is...banked track and flat track speed and derby skating is a sport for all ages and skill levels, from the beginning novice through Professional Derby star and world class athletes.

Whether you choose entry level skating, inline skating, 4Wheeler or ice skating; whether you're looking for a recreational experience or a viable cross training alternative; whether you want a chance at the Olympic rings, banked track and flat track speed skating and derby, these sports offer unique opportunities for athletic involvement and success.

The world's fastest self-propelled sport, banked track and flat track derby is skated by the American Roller Derby League (ARDL). This is a professional and volunteer-driven organization that promotes the grassroots development of derby styled skating for everyone interested.

In San Francisco, the club provides practice times, training, coaching and positive support for skaters of all levels, including skaters with special needs and those in other areas of roller sports.

Derby styled training is now available in the San Francisco.

How It Works?

The American Roller Derby League sanctions training activities on the flat track in San Francisco. When skaters become skilled, they may find home's with any skating group, flat track or banked track.

Skaters are put through drills that reinforce the sport of roller derby and they participate in scrimmage drills so that each skater can experience what a real bout or game is like.

Banked track and flat track training give skaters the opportunity to improve their athletic skills. Skaters meet skaters and their friends or families from other areas. An empowered bond is developed through the drills.

The American Roller Derby League also trains officials (referees).

How to Get There-- The easy Way

Banked and flat track derby skating is an athletic discipline composed of a single style: Short track 5-stride.

All skaters work out on a flat surface to learn the derby styles of moves. How to have governance over the body in a body contact sport. Many techniques are taught.

Skaters are expected to train with the teams weekly and work on individual "home" exercises on their own or with a friend.

Taking it to the limit -- Go all the Way

Banked track and flat track derby is a fast, furious and a visually exciting type of skating accompanied by the loud sounds of rumbling skates and shouting players. Six to ten skaters represent a two teams.

In many respects, the sport resembles a track meet on flat or an elevated surface. Spectators can identify with new competitors and watch their progress as they compete head-to-head over time.

Derby skating discipline require excellent physical conditioning. The sport involves strategy and quick thinking. At speeds of up to 32 miles an hour for elite competitors, the derby skater is a master of technique, able to evaluate the competition, develop a flexible race plan and execute split second judgment as the competition unfolds.

On a banked track, a professional learns to leverage the banks for extreme high bursts of speed and serious body contact with other contestants.

Beyond speed, derby offers an entrance into the world of roller derby bout performing.

The Internet TV show

At www.baycitybombers.com the league maintains a very active web site. Weekly videos are available on demand. Some training days are video taped. Photos are also added to the web site.

These media actions help skaters see themselves while watching and learning from other shows that are web cast.

The Scoop on Equipment

Regardless of the style of speed skating, many pieces of equipment are similar. Derby skaters wear casual lose clothes when training.

The American Roller Derby League provides jersey's and sometimes full uniforms for photo shoots and scrimmage bout drills.

Loose fitting clothes can also be worn for training and recreation.

Because of the high speeds attained and body contact in derby skating, skaters wear safety approved helmets, shin guards, gloves and knee pads.

The safety of speed skating athletes is of utmost importance to the coaches, owners, parents and participants. Coaches are trained in safety procedures while parents and skaters alike are educated on the proper methods of skating, entering and exiting the track and the placement of safety pads on the rink.

The banked track is specially designed and hand built by skaters who have spent their entire lives in the world of banks track athletics. The track is not as hard as ice or flat track surfaces. The tracks guard rails and kick rails are all designed with the interest of safety for the athlete.

The Skates

Inline and quad skates are used in the exercises. There has been much discussion over these two types of skates for years. Many old school banked track skaters hate the idea of inlines. Inlines may be faster and quads a little more maneuverable on the banks. Each skate has advantages and disadvantages. But there is a simple answer:

o   A skater should wear what they are accustomed to.

o   A skater should wear what they have been skating in.

Recent advances in technology give skaters a wide range of materials to chose from, both for boots, trucks and wheels. There are a few suggestions for derby skaters:

o   Your trucks should be loose fit.

o   Your boots should be loose fit.

o   Light weight equipment, means speed and endurance.

o   When you pay more, you get the best.

o   Quad skates use 45 degree speed skate trucks.
